The best coins for a trading bot, and why the majors win

5 min read·Updated 2 October 2026·By the Treo team

A bot trades often and in small steps, so the coin matters as much as the strategy. Three things decide whether a coin suits automation: liquidity, spread and history.

What makes a coin suitable

The five majors Treo starts with

Bitcoin (BTC)

The largest and most liquid crypto asset. It sets the direction for the whole market.

Ethereum (ETH)

The main smart contract network, with deep liquidity on every exchange.

BNB

The coin of the Binance ecosystem. Holding it can also reduce your Binance trading fees.

Solana (SOL)

A fast, widely used network. More volatile than BTC and ETH, which gives a bot more swings.

XRP

One of the oldest large coins, built around payments, with heavy daily volume.

These are not recommendations to buy. They are the coins where a rule such as never selling at a loss makes the most sense, because they have a history of recovering from drawdowns. History is not a promise.

Why small coins are a different game

Small coins can rise fast, and they can also fall most of the way to zero and stay there. A strategy that holds through dips is dangerous on an asset that may never come back. Thin order books also mean wider spreads and worse fills, which eats small profits.

Treo lets you add other coins in Settings, at your own risk. If you do, keep the size small.

Stablecoins and your free balance

A spot bot needs a stablecoin balance, usually USDT, to buy with. How much you keep free decides how many positions the bot can open and whether it can average down when prices fall.

Questions

How many coins should a bot trade?

A handful of liquid majors is enough. More coins spread your balance thinner and add assets you know less about.

Should I let a bot trade meme coins?

Only with money you can afford to lose completely. A hold until profit approach can leave you stuck in a coin that never recovers.

Does Treo pick the coins for me?

It starts with the five majors by default. You can change the list in Settings.
