How to create a Bitget API key safely
An API key lets software trade on your Bitget account without your password. Set up the right way, it can trade but can never withdraw. This takes about five minutes.
Before you start
You need a Bitget account with identity verification completed and 2FA switched on. No account yet? Sign up on bitget.com first.
Step 1. Open API Management
On Bitget, open your profile menu and choose API Management, then Create API key, and pick System generated.
Step 2. Name it and set a passphrase
Name the key Treo. Bitget asks for a passphrase: choose one and write it down, because you paste it into Treo together with the key.
Step 3. Set the permissions
- Read: on
- Spot trading: on
- Withdraw: off
- Transfer: off
Bind the key to this IP address: 2.29.57.164. Then confirm with your security code.
Step 4. Paste it into Treo
Bitget shows the API Key and the Secret Key. The secret appears only once. In Treo, pick Bitget, then paste the API Key, the Secret Key and your passphrase. Treo refuses any key that can withdraw or transfer.
Mistakes to avoid
- Leaving Withdraw or Transfer on. Treo will refuse the key.
- Forgetting the passphrase. Bitget cannot show it again, so make a new key.
- Not binding the IP address. The key is then usable from anywhere.
- Closing the screen before copying the secret.
Questions
Why does Bitget need a passphrase?
It is a third secret that Bitget asks for with every key. Treo stores it encrypted with the key and never shows it again.
Can I delete the key later?
Yes. Delete it in API Management on Bitget and Treo loses access at once. Your coins stay where they are.
Does Treo trade futures on Bitget?
No. Treo trades spot only, so you own the coins it buys and there is no leverage.
