How to create a Kraken API key safely
An API key lets software trade on your Kraken account without your password. Set up the right way, it can trade but can never withdraw. This takes about five minutes.
Before you start
You need a Kraken account with identity verification completed and 2FA switched on. No account yet? Sign up on kraken.com first.
The steps in pictures
Step 1. Open Connections and API
On Kraken, open Settings, then Connections and API, then Create API key.
Step 2. Name it and set the permissions
Name the key Treo.
- Query funds: on
- Query open orders and trades: on
- Query closed orders and trades: on
- Create and modify orders: on
- Cancel and close orders: on
- Deposit funds and Withdraw funds: off
Step 3. Add the IP allowlist
Add this IP address to the key's IP allowlist: 2.29.57.164. Then generate the key.
Step 4. Paste it into Treo
Kraken shows the API Key and the Private Key once. In Treo, pick Kraken and paste both. Treo trades USDT pairs on Kraken, so keep the USDT you want Treo to use there.
Mistakes to avoid
- Ticking Withdraw funds. Treo will refuse the key.
- Skipping the IP allowlist. Treo will refuse the key.
- Holding US dollars instead of USDT. Treo trades USDT pairs on Kraken.
Questions
Can I delete the key later?
Yes. Delete it under Connections and API on Kraken and Treo loses access at once. Your coins stay where they are.
What fee does Treo count on Kraken?
Kraken's standard fee is higher than most exchanges. Treo reads your own Kraken fee from your account and never counts less than Kraken's standard rate, so a sale only happens when it is in profit after the fees you really pay.
Does Treo trade futures on Kraken?
Not on Kraken. The autopilot trades spot on Kraken, so you own the coins it buys and there is no leverage. Trading futures yourself on the Trade screen is Binance only for now.
