How to create a KuCoin API key safely

An API key lets software trade on your KuCoin account without your password. Set up the right way, it can trade but can never withdraw. This takes about five minutes.

Before you start

You need a KuCoin account with identity verification completed, Google Authenticator switched on and a trading password set. No account yet? Sign up on kucoin.com first.

The steps in pictures

Step 1. Open API Management

On KuCoin, open your profile menu and choose API Management, then Create API, and pick API Trading.

Step 2. Name it and set a passphrase

Name the key Treo and set an API passphrase. Write it down: you paste it into Treo, and KuCoin cannot show it again.

Step 3. Set the permissions

• General: on
• Spot trading: on
• Margin, Futures, Transfer and Flex Transfer: off

Choose IP restriction and add this IP address: 2.29.57.164. Then confirm with your trading password and your authenticator code.

Step 4. Paste it into Treo

KuCoin shows the API Key and the Secret once. In Treo, pick KuCoin and paste the API Key, the Secret and your passphrase. Then move the USDT you want Treo to use from Funding to Trading in KuCoin (Assets, then Transfer).

Mistakes to avoid

• Ticking Transfer. Treo will refuse the key.
• Skipping the IP restriction. Treo needs it.
• Leaving USDT in the Funding account, where Treo cannot trade it.
• Forgetting the passphrase. Make a new key if you lose it.
